Principal's Update - 9/7/18

Dear Families,

We are off to a great start! There is so much to be thankful for. I am so proud of the staff and the students of St Mary of the Hills School. We had three very hot and humid days to start the 2018-2019 school year and the complaints were minimal. These days will be missed when we are braving the New England winter weather!

Our Service Initiative is off to a great start. Middle School students completed service hours over the summer, parents participated in a collaborative effort to improve the discipline policy, classrooms have been remodeled, and the school hall underwent a long overdue improvement. These things were done by community members because they believe in my vision of creating a positive learning environment for our deserving students. As I always say together we can accomplish such great things! I am blessed to lead such a wonderful community.

Today we started the day celebrating the liturgy with our new pastor Fr. Eric Bennett. The students did a wonderful job participating and the 8th graders were outstanding as they prepared and hosted the mass. Thank you to the 8th graders, Mrs. Ruggiero, Mrs. Cronin, and Mrs. Vasta for all your work on this day.

MAPS testing will begin this month. This is an Archdiocese mandate that will happen three times this year. This assessment is a tool for our teachers to see where their students are academically. The data derived from these assessments drives instruction in the classroom. Our goal is to see students grow academically as the year progresses. Please visit our school website for further information on this new type of assessment. When the schedule is finalized I will let you know the start date.

Please mark your calendars for Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 19 at 6pm. This is a parent only event but Jr. National Honor Society students in Grades 7 and 8 will watch your children for you if needed. The evening will begin with an address from me and then you will be able to visit your child’s classrooms where you will learn about the curriculum, and expectations.

I still need some PTO positions to be filled. The lunch program is covered, the homeroom parent coordinator is in place, and the PTO fees are coming out of FACTS this year so the workload is not too much. I really need someone to organize and lead community events and someone to be the treasurer. Please don't be afraid to take a leadership role. I will work with you and support you.

Please make the effort to get your students to school on time. Tardiness impacts the flow of the morning, adds extra work for the office staff, and interferes with instruction. Any student arriving after 9:10 will remain in the hall until 2nd period.

Safety is one of my main concerns. Do not pull into the school parking lot after 8:20 am or 2:30 pm. Also, do not double park on Brook Road and cross only using the crosswalks. If we all adhere to this it will eliminate the stress of keeping your children safe each day at dropoff and pickup.
