Principal's Update 2/17/17
It’s so hard for me to believe that February Vacation Week is upon us and when we come back we will be entering the season of Lent! So many wonderful things are happening here at St. Mary of the Hills. Our 8th grade students are receiving acceptances to many top Catholic High Schools, many new students are testing for spots in all grade levels for next year, a large percentage of our students are showing tremendous growth through their MAPS testing, and overall the climate is so positive. I attribute all of this to the hard work of our dedicated teachers and the support of all of our families. Without this collaboration none of this would be possible.
I have a few things to brag about. First of all one of our 8th graders, Colson Ganthier earned the Gertsner Scholarship from the Catholic Schools Foundation. Colson was nominated based on his academic performance and leadership. He was interviewed by a distinguished board and made such a wonderful impression on them. Our 4th and 6th graders competed in a Bananagram Challenge. This is a classroom competition that helps increase students vocabulary by building words like a Scrabble game. Julius Hicks in 6th Grade and Maya Edwards in 4th Grade were their grade level winners. They competed against each other yesterday and Maya was the overall “Top Banana”. She will be involved in a larger competition with other schools beginning on Monday, February 20th. We have been selected to participate in a new Math initiative in the Early Childhood grades. It is called Math Shelf. Students work two times a week on an online product using Ipads. This is intended to increase their number sense and better prepare them for the rigors of the Elementary School curriculum. Our 5th and 6th Graders went on a Science Field Trip to Gillette Stadium to put their scientific smarts to the test. We are very blessed. Please help us spread the word of what a special place St. Mary of the Hills is!
