St. Mary of the Hills School Immerses Students in STREAM Curriculum
A goal for the 2016-2017 school year for St. Mary of the Hills School in Milton is to fully immerse students in a STREAM curriculum. An expansion of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) guidelines, STREAM adds religion and the arts to be a heavy focus in the day to day lesson plans. STREAM allows teachers to create common themes between each subject in creative and innovative ways.
This week, Mrs. Etienne's 5th and 6th grade class combined science and engineering in their annual "Trash Art" project. Students were instructed to recycle for several weeks and then re-use the items to create something new. Students put their engineering skills to the test to create bottle cars, spinning jets, candy machines, and models of their favorite space shapes.
Mrs. Ruggiero's 7th grade science class incorporated music/arts into their science lesson this week as groups worked together to write raps about The Scientific Method.
The Junior High will be going to M.I.T several times this fall for special labs that focus on DNA and chemistry using LEGO system bricks. The 8th grade's current labs at St. Mary's are working on using the scientific method to explore what variables will allow radishes to grow.

6th grader, Marley Barret, created "The House of Kindness" which his recyclables. The house is filled with kind words to be pulled out daily. This was a personal favorite of Principal Marotta, as the school wide theme for this year is "Kindness Matters."
