Early Learners

Happy New Year!!!

What a year so far, the children are back from their vacation ready to learn and happy to be reunited with their friends.

This month's unit is Wind and Water. We have been focusing a lot on weather. After reading The Wind Blew by Pat Hutchins, we talked about what we think would blow away when we go play in the wind. They then drew pictures of their answers and created a class book. We also talked about Rain and Thunderstorms and made cool storm clouds using puffy paint.

We learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. and talked about differences, acceptance and kindness. Then we created a heart to help us learn that love comes in different colors. Everyone picked a color to make their fingerprint to fill the heart!

The new Early Learners have settled in nicely and have jumped right in to exploring and learning.  Last week we worked together to create rules for our room and have been practicing using our job chart.  The children also created All About Me books and got to "read" and share their books to the class. This week we talked lots about our Families and brainstormed what a family is and looks like. We created our Family Quilt to hang up using our family pictures and graphed how many people are in our families.

The children have been very excited about coming back to school after the holiday break. Our preschoolers have been busy engaging in all sorts of fun activities to start off 2022! The kiddos have enjoyed celebrating New Years, learning about hibernation, making winter crafts, and learning about the letters K & L. We have also started our 3rd OWL unit on Wind and Water. The classrooms are all looking forward to the fun experiments and activities that are a part of this unit. As always, the best learning time for preschoolers is through play and interacting with friends and teachers. We are ready to have fun during the 2nd half of our year! Happy New Year!

The PK classes started the new year off with some fun new activities. They did a hands-on science experiment to determine what effects different liquids would have on candy canes. After observing the changes for over an hour, they recorded the results with drawings. After learning about the Epiphany, they completed a writing assignment about a gift that they would bring to the baby Jesus if they had the chance. This week we began our "Star of the Week" segment. Each week we celebrate one child and their uniqueness. The children are learning to not only accept, but also appreciate the similarities and differences in all of us. After listening to a short story about Martin Luther King Jr., followed by an open discussion, they worked on a special writing activity about being a good friend. They also worked on math and writing skills while creating adorable “name” snowmen to hang over their cubbies. "The World of Color" is the thematic unit this month. Following a reading of the story The Lion and the Little Red Bird by Elisa Kleven, the children got right to work creating their own scenic masterpieces. I think we may have some future artists on our hands! Have a great weekend!

A few reminders:

*No one should be pulling into the school parking lot during school hours.

*Upon arrival the children should line up at their designated star and wait for the teachers to come out to greet you. Please do not let your child run around with the other children while you wait. There are a lot more children this year and we want to keep everyone safe.

*******If you arrive to school after 9:00am please bring your child to the main office. There are way too many children coming to the door after 9:00am. We will then be called to come and retrieve any late students.*********
