4th Grade Curriculum

Ms. Newell

Fourth grade is fabulous!  Fourth grade has a strong and challenging program to meet the needs of its students with a solid curriculum aligned to the Common Core Standards.  Teachers strive to provide stimulating, challenging lessons while making the necessary adjustments to give each child an opportunity to learn and be productive.

Science - In science students investigate several areas including earth science, physical science, and life science.  The human body unit is always very popular.  This year we have new science tables which will be helpful in conducting experiments and sharing theories in small groups.

Social Studies - In social studies the students "travel" across the country by investigating the different regions of the United States learning about the geography, natural resources, economy, and history of each region.  We begin with a pancake breakfast incorporating the products of the New England region and culminate with an amazing States Fair in the spring.  We love the enthusiasm of fourth graders and are mindful of our school’s mission to educate each child spiritually, academically, and socially throughout the year.

Math - In Math students are taught using the Common Core curriculum. Multiplication concepts are reinforced and division is introduced. The third grade students are also introduced to fractions, and decimals. Problem solving and critical thinking skills are also strengthened, while using games, hands-on activities and projects to reinforce conceptual understanding. Classroom Chromebooks are used to introduce and practice new concepts.

Reading and Language Arts - To foster their love of, and skills in reading, the children will have access to our extensive collection of Fountas & Pinnell leveled readers. In language arts students learn the different types of sentences, capitalization, punctuation, and parts of speech. The writing curriculum at St. Mary of the Hills is based on the Collins Writing Project. A variety of techniques are used to progress from writing well-structured sentences through well-developed multi-paragraphed essays. Spelling and vocabulary are emphasized throughout the year.  The reading focus in fourth grade spotlights reading comprehension, summarizing, predicting, inferring, and determining main idea and details through the Fountas and Pinnell reading program. Fourth graders also complete a variety of book reports across a range of literary genres, the favorite being the biography book report in February.

Religion - In religion the focus is on the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes, however each month we reflect on and celebrate the events of the church calendar such as All Saints Day, Advent, Christmas, and our devotion to Mary. The presentation of The Stations of the Cross is a very special event unique to grade four.  In the fall of 2016, the Archdiocese of Boston released detailed Faith Formation Standards for use in all Archdiocesan schools. St. Mary of the Hills is currently using these standards to evaluate the content and objectives of our current Religion curriculum to ensure alignment with these standards for Grade 4.  See the curriculum page of our website for the Faith Formation Standards.

Spanish - The Foreign Language offered at St. Mary of the Hills is Spanish.  Spanish meets twice a week for Kindergarten through Grade 5.  Students are introduced to basic vocabulary in Spanish using games, songs, and hands-on activities.
