2nd Grade Curriculum

Mrs. Pungitore

Welcome to Second Grade! Our focus is on very distinct interrelated skills including language, comprehension and critical thinking, mathematics, problem solving, and writing. Our students learn how to effectively gather information, apply it, and then use this information as the basis for new skills; such as inference, analyzing, and critical thinking. By focusing on the critical skills of comprehension and math in these formative years, we guide students to become confident and accomplished communicators. Through the use of various projects, we provide challenging and creative experiences that allow students to work individually and in groups.  In addition to a strong academic program, St Mary of the Hills is committed to developing the whole child. This well balanced environment is not only safe and inviting, but also supportive and encouraging. We are partners working together for the benefit of the children.

Religion - Religion in second grade is very special! In addition to our curriculum the children will also prepare for the wonderful sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.  In the fall of 2016, the Archdiocese of Boston released detailed Faith Formation Standards for use in all Archdiocesan schools. St. Mary of the Hills is currently using these standards to evaluate the content and objectives of our current Religion curriculum to ensure alignment with these standards for Grade 2.  See the curriculum page of our website for the Faith Formation Standards.

Science/Social Studies - In addition to exciting science and social studies units (biomes through the world and maps and globes, to name just two) the children will also have the opportunity to complete monthly projects on various topics such as nocturnal and Arctic animals.

Reading and Language Arts - To foster their love of, and skills in reading, the children will have access to our extensive collection of Fountas & Pinnell leveled readers. Phonemic awareness will be stressed through the use of Wilson Foundations instruction. Fluency will be stressed as they learn to "read like a river." They will also focus on comprehension strategies including retelling, visualization, summarizing, and identifying the main idea, details and character traits. Independence will be encouraged through reading, listening to recorded books, working in stations and responding to reading in their reading journals. The children will improve their phonics skills through our new differentiated spelling program as well as interactive phonics notebooks, classroom activities and the use of Lexia on classroom iPads.

Math - Using Common Core curriculum students will focus on regrouping, data recording, fractions, geometry, and money and time in their quest to become confident Mathematicians.  They will use classroom iPads to explore and practice concepts, use manipulatives, and interactive notebooks to excel.

Spanish - The Foreign Language offered at St. Mary of the Hills is Spanish.  Spanish meets twice a week for Kindergarten through Grade 5.  Students are introduced to basic vocabulary in Spanish using games, songs, and hands-on activities.
